Imani African Dance Company
Project AYA
AYA, the West African Adinkra symbol for ENDURANCE is the Imani Edu-Tainers African Dance Company’s program that promotes increased physical activity and reduced obesity rates. AYA incorporates traditional West African dance and drumming, along with the latest mobile and web technologies to educate about the lifelong benefits of physical activity and healthy eating.
The Problem: In the United States and around the world, people are spending more and more time doing sedentary activities. Moreover:
1. Inactivity tends to increase with age.
2. Women are more likely to lead inactive lifestyles than men.
3. Non-Hispanic white adults are more likely to engage in physical activity than Hispanic and black adults.
The AYA Solution: Good nutrition, physical activity, and healthy body weight are critical to an individual’s overall health and can reduce a person’s risk of developing serious health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer (Healthy People, 2020). AYA provides a fun environment to learn how to live a healthier lifestyle through education on nutrition and traditional African Dance for exercise.
